09.14.2011 Winter Ransom + Novakord + Ross Pead

Ross Pead @ Darwin’s Burgers and Blues My night started out with a nice chill acoustic set with Ross Pead. It’s been a nice change of pace having some relaxing acoustic music in the evening these past few days, but now I was ready for some heavier music!

Novakord: I grabbed a chicken salad sandwich and chili cheese fries and headed down to Atlanta! I popped in my Cazanovas cd hopped on the freeway own to East Atlanta. First up was Novakord. I’d met these guys several times at various other shows, but was never able to catch their set until now. I made it a point to get there on time so I could see their act! It was well worth it, this 3-piece set produces a rich soundscape! All 3 of them have laptops within reach to add another layer of sounds to the music, very cool stuff!

Winter Ransom: Next up is Winter Ransom. This time Homer stayed on for the whole set, and they played several new songs! I’m not sure if it was the sound system, or the addition of another guitar but some of the heavier parts got a bit muddled. Matt’s drums, Drew’s bass, and Jordan’s vocals really stood out and was able to break through the wall of guitars. All in all, Homer’s guitar noodlings really help round out the band’s sound.

09.13.2011 My past week. (LONG post)

I’ve been getting very behind on my posts on my personal site, everything recently has been posted directly to darwinsburgers.com. Today I’m going to play a bit of catch-up and show you guys what I’ve been up to.

09.07.2011 – Homer’s Acoustic Set – We didn’t have anyone playing this night, so Homer was nice enough to come out and play for us for only some food and a little booze. I brought out my loop pedal and him jam around with that. That kid is sick, after 10 minutes of fiddling, he was playing it like he’d owned one for years! I hate you Homer, and I can’t wait to see you play again.

09.08.2011 – Thursday Blues Jam – Thursday Blues Jam is my new favorite night of the week. It’s so much fun every time, I can’t wait for the next one! I’d like to thank the Cazanovas for signing their framed pictures!

09.09.2011 – Truett Lollis – Truett was amazing! Rhetta Akamatsu gave a fantastic review of Truett Lollis and Darwin’s in The Examiner. She liked our food!

Cody Matlock is an amazing little ball of talent. At 15, this young man is already jamming with the best players in town and soaking up advice and pointers from Truett, Little G, Danny Vinson and anyone else who happens to be in the room. Seeing Cody and Truett play together was history in the making!

09.10.2011 – The Cazanovas – It was great to finally see the Cazanovas do a full set! I’m used to just seeing them in small chunks while hosting the Blues Jam. Maurice Nazzaro, Danny Vinson, Eric Puller and stand-in bassist Harold Pattillo did a great job! Towards the end of the night, they were joined by Frankie Robinson, Little G, Cody Matlock, and Matt Smart for a bit of a jam session.

09.13.2011 – LITTLE G – WOW! I can listen to this guy play all night, oh wait I just did that! I had so much stuff to do last night, but I ended up sticking around for the entire set! I’m going to love having Little G here every week. You will too, just come out and watch him for a night. Here’s a little taste of what he’s bringing:

The Mammoth burger is so good i`m totally speechless. You want a bar burger? Well, try elsewhere. This is serious soulburger my friends!” – Little G Weevil

08.29.2011 Grasshopper Retrograde + FYN

I’ve been so busy up at Darwin’s lately I completely forgot to post these pics! I met up with FYN and Toy Devils before the show at 529 and caught the tail end of Grasshopper Retrograde’s set and got a few pics.

Next up was FYN, they were great as usual. I’d been telling some friends of mine about FYN for literally a year, and I am glad they finally made it up to see the show. The night closed out with Toy Devils, but the next morning was an important one at Darwin’s, so I skipped out having just seen them over the weekend at Nophest.

Nophest 08.27.2011

Nophest was a 3 day music festival in East Atlanta village. I made it out Saturday to go see Toy Devils and Sneaky Hand. I caught Signs of Iris from Greenville and another 2-piece set named S&M in between sets.

My day started out at Eastside Lounge with Toy Devils. I’ve always been a fan of Eastside Lounge. Before I was shooting concerts, I was shooting artists. Two were some friends of mine who did most of the murals at ESL. You can check out some more of their work at ipoopletters.com.

Toy Devils put on a loud, energetic show as always. I loved it! Apparently the furniture store neighbors weren’t used to having musical acts on during the daytime and pitched a big hissy fit. The owner ended up blocking off Eastside Lounge with his truck and put signs up complaining about the “noise”.

After Aaron, the owner of ESL calmed him down, the music continued. Signs of Iris was pretty good, although I was a little disappointed to hear 2 cover songs in their short set.

S&M was an interesting 2-piece featuring a guy on bass and loop pedals, and an operatic singer also on keyboard. It sounded very new-age/world music-ish.

We finished up our drinks and headed out in search of food. We ended up throwing darts at Gravity Pub. Running short on time, I decided to just grab a burger while we were there. Holy shit! They brought out this huge, greasy 1/2lb patty topped with giant onion rings and bacon. I took a quick picture and proceeded to tackle this beast. Not too bad, but it was so heavy and greasy I couldn’t finish it. I wasn’t disappointed, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

We finally headed towards Sneaky Hand. I forgot to check the schedule so we automatically headed to 529, which wasn’t open yet. I could hear Sneaky Hand echoing through the streets of East Atlanta, they had to be near someplace! We pull up the internets and find our way to Joe’s Coffee where the band is playing in the back courtyard. I love me some Sneaky Hand, but it was a little odd to see them play at a coffee shop.

08.17.2011 Drunken Unicorn (pt. 3)

Headlining the evening was Winter Ransom! I don’t think these guys need an introduction, they’ve been featured on my site several times. They put on an amazing set as always, and even played some new songs! Once again Homer from FYN joined them onstage for a few songs, can we expect this to be a regular occurrence? I hear he’s been practicing with them more these days…

Next up was Waking the Bates. I thought these guys were great! I snapped pics for a few songs, then decided to sit down and enjoy the show. Lead singer Nick belted out Tom-York-esque vocals while jamming on bluesy to metal riffs on either his guitar/mandolin/keyboard.

A night in Midtown, what a great night of music! The evening began with Paperwork, a Hiphop collective featuring Brandon Ivy and Dustin Ell. I’d seen Dustin do an impromptu song with Josh Yoder of Jungol once, and I was excited to see him perform again! Paperwork was pretty good, but it left me wanting to hear some live instruments rather than some looped tracks. Someone get Matt Donald onstage to back ’em up!

07.30.2011 Andrew and the Disapyramids

“Hey man, you going to see the Disapyramids tonight?”
“I didn’t even know they were playing.”
“Oh yah, Homer is playing with them tonight at Noni’s.”
“WHAT?”

Thus began my evening. This was Homer’s first time playing with the band, rockin his new hat. The Disapyramids were a bit light today, missing a few members but they always manage to put on a great show! Andrew is always an entertaining frontman to watch, and I love hearing him belt out those old tunes!

I can’t wait to have The Disapyramids play at Darwin’s!

Noni’s was an interesting venue. It was on an outdoor patio and served free beer and shots all night! We hung out for a few hours and checked out the followup acts. I wasn’t impressed with either of the performances. A couple of DJs and some hip-hop artists, the beats were uninspired and the rhymes were a bit repetitive.
